The Chase _ --Sarenia-- _ « Thread Started on Jan 12, 2008, 4:46pm »

Lahira crouched at the edge of the clearing, her dark blue eyes focused on the buck before her. Her thin, long tail twitched and she dug her claws into the earth, her anticipation building. Once Sarenia came out of the other brush, she would back her up and this buck would be theirs. The gord hanging at Lahira's side felt like claws themselves, powerful weapons that could be used for many things. Lahira leaped up as she saw a silver flash of fur, ready to spring forward and catch the buck in her claws the moment Sarenia emerged from the forest on the other side. She crouched lower as the big raised its head, her eyes steadily fixed.

Sarenia could see the eagerness in her friend's eyes, and her fierce heart beat loudly in her chest. Sarenia crouched, then sprang. Her grey-streaked white pelt marked with black rossettes rippled with power as she streaked towards the buck. She unsheathed her black claws and rose up, using her thick long black-tipped tail to balance herself as she dug her claws into the beast's shoulder. She bit down on its neck, pressing her jaws together. She heard paws swishing through the grass and hoped Lahira was coming in to make the kill.

Lahira leapt up as Sarenia burst from the cover of the forest. Her paws created a swish in the grass and the velvety black folds of her pelt rippled with streaks of sunlight as she pelted over to the buck. She leaped up and snagged her claws in the beast's throat, biting down on the back of its neck. She bit down hard, feeling its spine crack and break in her strong jaws. She continued to bite down until her jaws ached. Finally the beast gave a startled, horrified cry and fell to the earth under the weight of the two beasts. Lahira leaped to one side, blood dripping from the corner of her jaws.

Sarenia felt the buck buckle beneath her claws and she leaped onto the soft grass. A shimmer of silver fluttered around her and enveloped her until you could see nothing but brightness. Her form twisted and turned until finally she appeared out of the light as a beautiful young woman again. Sarenia touched the beast and prayed to the Spirits, or SpiritClan, for protection over the beast's spirit. She turned and looked up at Lahira, her eyes shining with the adreniline rush of the chase and the kill. It had been a sucsessful hunt.

Lahira also turned a bright, yet silghtly dulled, silver and morphed into a human again. She saw Sarenia saying the prayers of the hunter and waited. When she turned, Lahira smiled back at her.
"May SpiritClan grant this creature's good soul fair travels to the Spiritworld." She finished the prayer in the customary fashion, then popped open the cap to her gord. She bended the water out of it, letting her palms and fingers move with the swirling wave of clear blue water. She flattened her palm, then made a cutting action at the buck. This sliced the hindquarters cleanly. This was the way a Waterbender brought home meat, since it was carried much more easily if it was split between two.

Sarenia assisted her friend in the cutting, her hands moving back and forth as she guided the ice-waves through the buck's rough hide. She lay the meat on top of another, stacking the ones she would carry back to the kitchen. She slipped her water over it and created a dome around it. This was the way she would carry it, though it could be tiring. It would clean it for the first half of the journey home, and she could carry the meat on her back for the rest of it.
"The cooks will be happy to get this. Let's go." Sarenia said cheerfully.

Lahira gently stroked the last of the flank from the meat, then laid her hands on what they would be leaving behind. A faint glow arose and it all froze. She did the same with the meat, then slipped a leather cord bound to her waist around them both. She slipped the chord over her shoulders then turned to Sarenia.
"Yes, I am sure they will. Very well, let us depart." She said, smiling. The heavy burden she carried was hardly anything for her small, compact body. She could carry two times this weight if she was needed to. She blinked, then started off for home, her prints leaving small crushed rings in the grass.
